J.Robert on the Naples Princess!

Passing over the waters the Gordon River and out to the Gulf of Mexico, guests on THE NAPLES PRINCESS are treated each second Tuesday of the month to JRobert's guitar, fiddle, steel drums, ukulele, and vocals. The wind swept up and rushed over the bow while the birds kept pace on the port side. Even the rain shower was magnificent and served to heighten the sense of magic...

Miss the First Show? Upcoming Second Show!

“Way down south, in the dappled shade of the tangled mangroves on the edge of the Ten Thousand Islands, there dwells a living legend -- the Legend of the fabled Florida Fiddler. And who is the Florida Fiddler? Why, he is the Forrest Gump of the Everglades, the Johnny Appleseed of Big Cypress, the “everyman” renegade player-performer of that alter-ego, confounded, red-headed step-child of the instrument called a “violin” -- otherwise known as THE FIDDLE!Yessuh. It was the Florida Fiddler who made the Devil Come Down to Georgia, who put the blue in bluegrass, the orange in the Orange Blossom Special, the saw in sawgrass, and the sigh in cypress.

So raise the brim of your straw hat, chew on a hayseed, and put your feet up while you embark on a magical journey from the banks of the Old Suwanee to the rollicking Tropic of Margaritaville. Now don’t be shy, folks! Ain’t nothing shy about the Florida Fiddler
Join right in. Laugh, sing, and clap along with music, culture, and history from the Land of the Walking Tree!”

Caloosahatchee Flow

We all need

To live and breathe

And walk this earth together

It’s our turn

To live and learn

Do what’s right for each other

Chorus -

Sound the alarm!

Stop the harm…

For the Glades and Gulf of Mexico

Save the waters

For our sons & daughters

Let a clean Caloosahatchee flow

Read the signs

Now's the time

Hear the thunder in the sky

Hand in hand

On Florida sands

Let’s keep our waters alive!

Chorus –

Dolphin & manatee

share with......humanity

Hold on and don’t let go!

Save the waters

For our sons and daughters

Let a clean Caloosahatchee flow

FRIEND OF THE MONTH

Captn Jac

My friend Captn Jac sailed down to SW Florida from Indiana in 2013 and we met at a WGCU Radio interview.

I could tell right away he was a Trop Rock dreamer looking to live the life Jimmy Buffett sings about!  The names of his songs - "Livin On the Hard" "My Bahama Mama" "The Island of My Dreams" and "On Marigot Bay" - all reflected visions of sun, sand, and sub-tropical Florida paradise.

Hey!  My kind of guy!  I've been living it for so long i almost took things for granted and forgot how wonderful it is living down here on Marco Island, Florida!

So we recorded on WGCU together, and we ran aground together on my sailboat "Blue Water" a couple times.  I invited him on quite a few gigs and he's recorded my steel pan and fiddle on a few his island style, Caribbean themed projects...   i've gotta say, the Captn's become quite the buddy!

So I would like to share the news of his upcoming CD called "Adventures In Paradise" which is due to be released this coming October 1st 2016.  Swing on over to his website www.CaptJac.com and give him a hardy "Ahoy!" from J.Robert!

Friend of the Month!

I recently received the huge honor of being invited to play my "Florida Fiddle" for JOHN McEUEN'S 70th Birthday Celebration Show in Sarasota. Wow!!

I have always treasured John's productions with the

 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band...

25 Studio Albums, 1 Live Album, and 4 Compilations.

*   *   *   *   *   *

As a young man, I studied John's records for hours and hours, learning songs and stylings of all his musician friends, so I feel very comfortable with his selection of tunes.

*   *   *   *   *   *

I first met John McEuen while performing music with Seminole Chief Jim Billie at one of the early "Fire in the Swamp" Festivals featuring John McEuen, David Allen Coe, Charlie Daniels, Mark O'Connor...but in my eyes, John stood head and shoulders above them all.

Since then, I have performed many gatherings, festivals, and clubs with John.  I'm looking forward to a future of composing, playing music, and a continued good friendship with with John McEuen!

(Let the Clean) Caloosahatchee Flow
Brent Moyer (of Nashville and Jackson Hole) and I co-wrote Caloosahatchee Flow for our friends on Sanibel-Captiva Islands in response to their challenges with the toxic discharges from Florida's Lake Okeechobee. It is our hope that this work-of-art will continue to draw attention to this vital environmental issue. And a very special thanks goes out to Nancy Koerner, for her insightful, passionate, and inspiring video interpretation of our song.

The Store - Museum is now the oldest standing structure in SW Florida since Monroe Station was recently burned down.  My European friends always get a kick out of our concept of time and tradition.

"BUBBLES" original score JRobert, Mangrove Music Studios

This video is a sequel to Sanibel Black Death Red Tide,” featured in our March newsletter. As a recap: these waters are the direct result of massive toxic discharges that come down the Caloosahatchee. The water is overflow from Lake Okeechobee – billions of gallons daily. It is loaded with nitrogen, phosphorus, raw sewage, and mercury that wash down from the vast agricultural lands of Central Florida. These discharges are destroying SW Florida’s reputation for turquoise crystalline waters and pristine beaches. It is a harsh reality.

Yet, on this day of filming, despite black waters and a gloomy prognosis, sudden beauty emerged in the form of giant soap bubbles that began to rise from behind a sea grape tree…

Upcoming Gigs!

High Season in SW Florida will be over soon...

Presently, all  upcoming engagements JRobert include Private Parties, Weddings, Corporate, Resort Hotel presentations...

JRobert will be attending the Florida Folk Festival May 27th - 29th and spending extended time in Mangrove Music Studios producing Songs and composing an exciting, new, soon to be announced Movie Score!

As promised, here is Nancy R. Koerner's"Miccosukee Waters" produced byJRobert - Mangrove Music Studios.

Mangrove Music

Enjoy Mangrove Music on SoundCloud/MangroveMan and pretend you are cruising the 10,000 Islands with Smallwood Store Boat Tours.

"Islands come and islands go

Swept by the tides of the sea…

Mangrove music…listen to it!

In the land of the mangrove tree."

“The spirit of the 10,000 islands" lives in the Walking Tree.

Step out of the ancient Gulf Stream, and into the sleepy black waters where the rivers of the Glades meet the sea…and drift the backwaters of time.

***

12,000 years ago, this very place was high, and dry, and cold…and the sea was 50 miles to the west. There were other people celebrating the sunset…people just like you and me.  Only these people had a very different daily drama and struggle for life. Bones of mammoths, saber tooth tigers, and giant sloths have been found scattered around the camp fires of these people.

***

After thousands of years, the last Great Age of Ice slowly melted, and the waters of the ocean rose and the beasts were hunted into extinction.

Eventually, people turned to the sea to feed their families.  And for the last 5,000 years the mangrove forest has become the habitat of these “Mangrove People.”

Indigenous people called mangroves the “walking trees.”  Their prop roots reach out into the bay, creating the barrier islands that protect us from tropical storms and hurricanes.

Nowadays, we call the mangrove forest the “nursery of the sea.”  Tannic-dark waters contain more life per cubic foot than any other waters in the world…feeding yet higher forms of life, all the way up the food chain, and splashing into all the great oceans.

***

500 years ago, the first Spanish explorers reported being able to dip a bucket into the mangrove waters and fill it with fish. Sometimes, my grandfather would joke about going out to walk the backwaters on the backs of snapper and mullet.” When the conditions were right, Granddad would stand on the edge of the gulf and watch the full moon reflect off the thrashing tarpon as they migrated up the coast…millions of them…like a river of life in an endless sea.  He would watch for hours and hours...

***

Stories of ancient Indians, Spanish explorers, pirate gold, and condo skylines…all wash away into the Tides of Time.

Islands come and islands go

Swept by the tides of the sea…

Mangrove music…listen to it!

In the land of the mangrove tree

East, west, traffic’s a mess

North, south, full house

Adios, coast to coast

Beware, it’s a jungle out there!

Ooo…I want to let go…

Where the wild winds blow

And the waters flow to sea!
Magic under the mangroves

Let time undo the tangles

Where the rivers meet the sea

In the Land of the Walking Tree

Stars out over the mangroves

Music of heavenly angels

Where life is a mystery

In the Land of the Walking Tree

JRobert at Big Cypress National Preserve 40th!

Sometimes called the "Western Everglades" or simply the "Little Sister of the Everglades " - Big Cypress National Preserve celebrates it's 40th year at Swamp Heritage Fest this December 6th.

Representatives of Miccosoukee and Seminole Tribes,  National Park Rangers, local tour guides, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas and Everglades restoration promoters, as well as  wildlife and conservation foundations are represented this year.

Performing musicians are all Everglades and Big Cypress friends, including Raiford Starke, Boomslang Swamp Singer, Seminole story teller Paul Buster as "Cowbone," Gator Nate ofthe Gladezmen, and JRobert!

The story has been shared by several news agencies, including Laura Tichy-Smith's article for the Coastal Life section of Fort Myers News Press Ft. Myers News-Press and Marco Island's  Coastal Breeze wrote great articles!

We're already making plans for the 41st Swamp Fest Celebration December 2015

December Friend - Peter B. Gallagher

The first time I read Peter B. Gallagher's name was on the cover of "Barefoot Man's Typical Tropical Cruisin' Boozin' Songbook!"

Award-winning journalist and freelance writer, Pete was with the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper at the time he wrote the linear notes to Barefoot Man's publication.

Barefoot Man's songs made a big impression on me at the time.  1985 was my first summer playing at Quinn's on the Beach and living in a room at Marriott's Marco Island Resort and Spa, so Pete's narrative gave tons of credibility to the Songbook!

Later that summer, when the Florida Cattlemen's Association gathering took place on Marco Island, Pete showed up at Quinn's as photographer with Native American

Seminole Chief Jim Billie.

Pete has continued working with Chief Jim Bilie all these years, and has collected a fascinating treasure trove of Seminole and Miccosouki photos which he recently presented to the Everglades City Historical Society.

WMNF 88.5 fm - perhaps the nation's strongest public sponsored and independent radio stations - is located in Tampa, Florida, and features Pete Gallagher's "Florida Folk Show" 9 - 10 am every Saturday morning.

The "Florida Folk Show" is the "voice" of every great and up-coming Florida Folk and Americana musician, song writer, and story teller from all around the State.

Along with every show, Peter invites national and international stars to perform live with local artists.

"From his landmark Vanishing Florida column in the St. Petersburg Times to his investigative work that freed migrant farm-worker James Richardson from jail (after being wrongfully convicted for murdering his seven children) to his work exposing the tragedy of Rosewood, the plight of the endangered Florida Panther, and his expose on unethical state government permitting and variance capers that allowed the destruction of the world’s oldest aboriginal canoes (all three nominated for Pultizers; the Richardson expose won the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Award), he has consistently fought for truth and sanity in Florida environmental and cultural issues."

Florida Folk Show music is alive with the public engagements...tonight in Tampa Bay at Butler's Key West Bar, in the spring at America's oldest running Florida Folk Festival, or occasionally at the Little Bar in Goodland.

Then, Peter is always back at WNNF.org each and every Saturday morning 9 - 10 am!

Peter B. Gallagher is one of my most respected friends...and a mighty Friend of Florida!

Need I say more.

A Million Thanks!

I was happy to perform another Golisano Children's Hospital Sunshine Kids Celebration at La Playa Resort of Naples.

Nice looking poster.

Many of my charity performances are to raise money for various foundations and causes...this show however, was for the recipients.

We had 26 cancer victims,  all children, playing on the beach with their parents, brothers, and sisters.

We shared many very emotionally touching moments as families from all walks and strata of society gathered to share the sun, sand, and sea together...

Thank you Robert Keane for your brilliant organizational talents and warm heart.

Please contribute to Golisano Children's Hospital !

Dawn and Geno of the Hot Topic Bandinvite me every year to play fiddle for their Country Hoedown at the Port Royal Club...and Zowie!!  This band is hot!  They are one of the most fun and up-beat contemporary country bands I've played!

The St. John Neumann HS fundraiser at Pelican Bay Club was a roaring success!  In less than 3 hour, contributions exceeded $50,000 for a new air-conditioning system !  What put it over the top was all the help from student cheer leaders, sports teams, and musicians.

A giant "thank you" to Ann Renner for  inviting me to perform!

November was the month of private parties...Bob Scholle's "Welcome Back" party at South Seas on Marco Island, Marriott's Valvoline reception, New York Life at La Playa, and a Keewayden Island adventure with Sabrina Williams are at the top of my list!

JRobert - Marco Music Man

Florida Fire Fiddler!

Who is this masked man?!

Halloween left-overs?

No, it's a fun new JRobert persona...

It's "JRobert - Florida Fire Fiddler!"

I've played a few Charity events as
the "Fire Fiddler" and I really enjoy the freedom of my character's anonymity.

The "Fire Fiddler" repertoire includes a broad selection of contemporary and classic instrumentals.

I'm ready to step out on a limb with new chops at the drop of a hat!

Watch closely, however, and you'll notice the fancy dance steps are actually elementary Tai Chi moves!

November Friend - Sabrina Williams

Sabrina Williams came to me as an answer to a prayer..."Dear Lord, please send a genuine Island Songstress!"

I'm double blessed with Sabrina...not only is she a spectacular music artist, but a trusted friend.  This proud Jamaican woman is also the most honest, hard working, and compassionate person I have ever met!

Sabrina incorporates her Reggae, R&B, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Dance and Afrocentric background into her way of life.  I often see her at the Marco Island YMCA yoga, Tai Chi, and dance classes, all of which she so easily expresses in her performances.

In 1982, she wrote "Where Are You Now?" as a tribute to Bob Marley.  Her heartfelt song was responsible for her appearance on Reggae Sunsplash ’91, which aired on Pay Per View Television worldwide and featured, Ziggy Marley, Dennis Brown and Shabba Ranks.

Sabrina's appearance on Jamaica’s "National Pantomimes Show" impressed producer Michael Bennett, actor Ben Vereen and director Chapman Roberts who cast her in "Revelations," a remake of Jesus Christ Superstar.

In the Jazz arena she has performed with Donald Byrd, Monty Alexander, Ernie Ranglin and appeared on Air Jamaica Jazz Festivals, featuring George Benson, Branford Marsalis, Boyz ll Men, Nora Jones.

In January of 2009 Sabrina gave smashing performances at the Jamaica Jazz Festival which featured the great Lionel Richie, The OJays and many other giants.

Sabrina is ready and available for your special celebration at 230 878 8059 or email her at ReggaeWomanJM@yahoo.com and visit her web page at Sabrina Williams Sonic

A Million Thanks!

JRobert's performance with John McEuen and former Nitty Gritty Dirt Band member John Cable was a blast!!

In October, we played to an overflowing house at Sarasota's WSLR's Community Radio and Culture Center.

John and John both shared great stories and songs of the early days with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as the United States first musicians to play behind the Soviet Union's Iron Curtain back in th 1970's.

Thank you, John for moving to Florida and creating such classic acoustic events.

By sharing your history, you make history!

The 2014 Everglades Region CMAA Charity Classic Gala was a stunning success!

This is the Florida Chapter of  Club Managers Associatoin of America and was extremely well attended this year at the Bonita Bay Club.

A special recognition and heaps of praise go to my friends at Exclusive Destination Management, EDM, for their excellence in presentation this year!

All proceeds benefited "Barbara's Kids" at Golisano Children's Hospital.

Several weddings, rehearsals, and beach ceremonies were celebrated this October at the Marco Island Marriott, Clam Pass Beach, Naples Grande, and La Playa...

Barry and Laura Hauze Manson's Wedding was a wonderful gathering of island friends and family...thank you, Laura!

Cheers to the  Pat and Stefanie Lawley Wedding Celebration...this dream wedding was designed a year in advance!

Drew & Erica Simon Hemmer's Wedding Celebration at Coconut Point's Hyatt Resort was a traditional family gathering...I felt like the "town cryer" announcing events with no PA in the boisterous dining hall!
Beautiful people!

I especially enjoyed performing a "Night of Flamenco" guitar for Grey Oaks Country Club...my fingers were flying while keeping up with the Flamenco Dancers!

Sabrina & JRobert welcomed Total Health Immersions back to the Naples Beach Hotel for their 8th Celebration with us!

This year's TeleTracking Conference at Marriott's Marco Island Resort was Big!
